Unfolding Light & Place. Artist-in-Residence & Solo exhibition, Butter Factory Art Centre, Cooroy. October 2021
Helle Cook | Unfolding Light & Place | Butter Factory Art Centre | Kaya Sulc Studio www.butterfactoryartscentre.com.au/studio-residency.html Unfolding Light & Placeexhibition explores the natural light & environment of Cooroy, Noosa and beyond, in expanded painting. Helle Cook is a Brisbane-based, Danish-Australian artist, who is curious about the sensory and embodied experience of light and place. During the month of October 2021, Helle has been artist-in-residence at Cooroy Butter Factory. Here, she has been responding to the natural environment of Noosa and beyond in this new series of work: Unfolding Light & Place. Often bringing her art practice beyond the studio, Helle immerses into the landscape where she creates ephemeral textile installations. She documents the diaphanous work in nature as it interacts with the environment and light. Unfolding Light & Placehas developed into a luminous installation of paintings, ceramics and diaphanous textiles, layered with video projection. The work has been created during the residency and as an interactive exhibition - you are invited to engage & touch, enquire and wonder.

GAH Denmark - Hollufgård Art Residence / Sculpture Park - May/June 2019: Veils of Trees (the textile installation was exhibited for 4 months at Hollufgård Sculpture Park, Denmark) HELLE COOK: VEILS OF TREESgah.dk/helle-cook-traeernes-sloer/?lang=en"Veils of Trees is an installation of transparent textile paintings suspended between 6 Linden trees that circle the top of the 1760 ‘Snail Hill’ (Sneglehøjen) at Hollufgård. The 10 textile works are painted in situ at Hollufgård Artist Residence. Artist Helle Cook, has just completed her second residency at Hollufgård. Helle usually lives in Brisbane, Australia. Her art practice explores the notion of home, liminality and light – in particular how the Nordic sensory experience of light and nature differ from Australia. Most of all, the simple, symbolic and abstract lines of the paintings are intuitive with sense of place, environment, light and Nordic aesthetics in mind."
House Conspiracy Residency during October 2018 – Artist in Residence Helle Cook
During the month of October 2018, I have had the opportunity of being an Artist in Residence at House Conspiracy in Westend, Brisbane. I have been investigating the themes of landscape, light and the liminal space in expansive and interdisciplinary paintings. It has been a wonderful and engaging month of inspiration, collaboration and making.
The fine old house sits with proud posture despite being wedged in-between multi-stories; and the work takes on an ephemeral, translucent quality in landscapes that become vertical and elongated. While working in the ever-evolving (under more construction) urban landscape, I have been responding to the interstices of the close environment and far beyond – quietly engaging with ‘The Rights of Nature’. In Studio 1 I have been exploring the sense of light, the landscape and environment and the liminal space - while collaborating with Curator Jenny Brown and Artists Seb Guy & Tamsin Edwards-Francis. Our work interacts and interconnects in interdisciplinary installations – in ‘Inter-Scapes’ that engage and respond to the notion of landscape.
The residency has resulted in a series of large-scale paintings on unstretched canvas and sheer fabric that take on immersive, ephemeral and mobile, free hanging qualities. Analogies of mobility and migration, the notion of home, Nordic light and an ever-evolving landscape come to mind. Fabric and thread connote domesticity, craft and the idea of home and enables the light to travel through. Still my work remains lingering in the threshold between abstraction and figuration thus inviting multifaceted imagination and exploration. My aim is to prompt enquiry, interaction and communication. The House Conspiracy residency has been a wonderful opportunity for experimentation, art-making and collaboration and the ‘Inter-Scape’ showcase now shares and invites interaction and exploration.
